NEWS 14-12-2019. NEWS FOR 15-DEC (MONDAY) 1. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has topped the Forbes’ 2019 edition of 100 World’s Most Powerful Women for the ninth consecutive year. She was praised for standing up to US President Donald Trump and for allowing over a million Syrian refugees into Germany. 2. On December 14, 2019, PM Modi reviewed the Namami Gange Project at Kanpur. He chaired the first meeting of National Ganga Council with the Union Ministers. 3. The Seventh Economic Census is being conducted nationwide through Common Service Centres (CSC) and is expected to be completed by March 2020. This is the first time the census is being conducted digitally. 4. The coveted FICCI India Sports Awards 2019 were presented to the winners on 11 December 2019 at New Delhi. The awards are an attempt by FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry) to acknowledge and recognize contribution of sports persons and various stakeholders who deliver excellent results during the year. 5. Around 73 countries have joined the Climate Ambition Alliance (CAA) at the COP25. The alliance is led by Chile and was launched at the Climate Action Summit, New York in 2019.Both Chile and UK will work together to mobilize additional actors to join the alliance. They will also work towards COP26 that is to be held in November 2020 at Glasgow, UK. 6. In a first in the history of Indian sports, all the nine athletes nominated by the Sports Ministry for Padma Awards are women.
