1. Indian
Navy Day was observed on 4th December to commemorate the Operation
Trident conducted by Indian Navy during Indo – Pak war of 1971.
2. Jamaica’s
ace sprinter, Usain Bolt has been declared by International
Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) as the World Athlete of the year, 2016.
He won three medals, each one in 100meters, 200 meters and 4x100 meters in Rio
Olympics. He has won this award for the sixth time. In the woman category Almaz
Ayana of Ethopia won the award in women’s category, who won gold medal in 10000
meters in Rio Olympics.
3. Union Ministry for Human
Resource has launched Vittiya Saksharta Abhiyaan to make people aware about
cashless economic society. Under it, students would be roped in to encourage
people to use cashless modes of transaction.
4. Yoga, an ancient Indian practice has been included by UNESCO in
it’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage Of Humanity. The list includes those
intangible heritage elements that demonstrate diversity of cultural heritage.
5. India has signed a deal with US to buy BAE System’s 145 M-777
ultra light Howitzers worth $750.25. Twelve guns will come to India in fly away
condition and remaining 120 guns will be assembled in India. It can fire upto 24
kms , weighs 4,1000 Kg and can be transported by helicopters. They will be
mainly used in high altitudes on Indo – China border.
6. The sixth Heart of Asia ministerial conference concluded
on 5th December in Amritsar, Punjab. The conference declared Pakistan
based terrorist groups as grave threat to regional peace. Also, Indian Prime
Minister Narendra Modi stressed the need of resolute action against those involved
in sheltering and financing them. The Heart
of Asia – launched in November 2011 to provide a common platform for Afghanistan
and its neighbors to face common threats like terrorism, narcotics, poverty and
others.
7. Lt Gen. Qamar Bajwa has been appointed as the
new army chief of Pakistan. He had also commanded Pakistan’s 10 Corps which has
defence responsibility on LoC with India.
